We were surprised out of tow era that stopped in after a late flight. The cheese fries and Lafayette special were cheap and delicious, the service was impressively fast and simple. Unpretentious places like this keep Detroit true to itself in a traditional diner sense!
My 1st Coney experience and what better way than to try it at the legendary Lafayette that has been in the business since the early 1900s and when you step inside either entrances to the shop, you feel like time stood still. You walk inside and you find a table. Someone will come ask what you want or they may shout and ask you from behind the counter. I was asked from behind the counter what I wanted but I needed a minute. He later came by to ask what I wanted bc he was bringing food to the table behind me. I decided to go with the classic Coney Island with everything and a chili cheese fry with an ice cold Vernor's ginger ale. As for the Coney, I was very impressed with the quality of the dog. So rare these days to bite into a dog that had a snap giving way to the burst of savory well seasoned juice inside the dog. Then pair that with some good chili and mustard and onions. I didn't know it comes w mustard. Glad I didn't bc the combination was good even though I would have told them to hold the mustard. But everything tasted really good together. The only thing I had to do was salt my chili cheese fries. It was a bit bland for me with the fries. But the chili was just right with the savory hot dog. That combo was fantastic. So glad I got to try a Coney for the 1st time.
Looks like it hasn't been remodeled in at least 25 years. It's like the dive bar of restaurants. Reminds me of my childhood. Going to places my father loved. It was a Coney Island challenge! When in Detroit... Lafayette was our clear winner. Quaint. Basic. Immediate customer service. Love that they keep it old school and yell to each other. Feels appropriate for this environment. We were in and out. They keep it moving here and just felt more comfortable here. The dog... cooked perfectly. Soft bun. The toppings were lite as I asked for and overall was a better tasting than their neighbor. WINNER!
The place if you don't know it is small and always full. The service is fast. The coney dogs are the best. They have that nice snap to them. The chili cheese fries are always fresh and have that gooey goodness.
This old school joint (it's 114 years old--I think that's legitimately old school) has a classic diner feel and a very cool old counter. The coney dog didn't snap like the dog at American but the chili was very flavorful and delicious and better than American's. The counter fellow even gave us a plate of their excellent chili on the house. We dipped and swiped our fries in it until the plate was clean. If I had to choose, I would pick Lafayette over American. The chili is simply better.
